November 2023: Linxens

Linxens Combines Skin Adhesive Technology and Biosensors for Cutting-Edge Medical Wearables.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare technology, one company is taking bold strides toward revolutionizing patient monitoring and the way we interact with our health. Linxens, a global leader in skin adhesive technology and biosensors, is at the forefront of innovation with a vision that's changing the face of medical wearables.

The Power of Biosensors in Healthcare

In recent years, biosensors have emerged as powerful tools in medical diagnostics. These devices seamlessly blend biological elements with transducers to detect specific compounds. Enzymes, antibodies, DNA, or whole cells serve as the biological components, interacting with the target analyte to generate a measurable signal. The transducer then converts this signal into a form that offers real-time information about the analyte's concentration.

Within the world of biosensors, electrochemical sensors are gaining prominence due to their high specificity and sensitivity. These sensors are not only cost-effective but also easy to design, especially when compared to traditional lateral flow assays. Originally associated with glucose monitoring for diabetes, electrochemical sensors have expanded their reach to include point-of-care testing for infectious diseases, chronic conditions, and continuous monitoring using devices like Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).

The Rise of Medical Wearables

Simultaneously, the realm of medical wearables has seen remarkable growth. Initially popularized by the advent of smartwatches, the scope of medical-grade wearables has expanded dramatically. These devices, designed for functions such as heart monitoring (ECG), sleep tracking, and vital sign monitoring, are now made possible through the development of biocompatible materials specifically tailored for medical applications.

Linxens: The Pioneers in Medical Sensors

Linxens embarked on its journey in the world of medical sensors by specializing in designing and manufacturing electrochemical sensors for blood gas monitoring. These sensors play a vital role in Siemens Healthineers' EPOC system. Over time, Linxens has honed its ability to offer custom-designed electrochemical sensors with various materials, designs, and applications. A unique aspect of their approach is their commitment to considering mass production as part of the development process to control costs effectively.

In 2022, Linxens took a significant leap forward by acquiring NILE AB, a Swedish-based company known for designing and mass-producing medical wearables for the In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) industry.

The Linxens Advantage: Custom Wearables for Diverse Monitoring Needs

The merger of these two capabilities has enabled Linxens to extend its services to startups and the IVD industry, offering a wider array of biosensors in wearable applications. Linxens now can design, prototype, and manufacture unique solutions that can remain comfortably on the body for weeks, measuring a diverse range of signals, including heart rate, brain activity, pressure, temperature, pH, liquid composition, UV exposure, and biomolecule concentrations.

What makes Linxens stand out is its ability to adapt electrochemical sensors through various functionalization methods, including enzymes, oligonucleotides, aptamers, ions, and antibodies. Moreover, they've managed to develop a form factor for sweat collection using microfluidic channels, which can be incorporated into arm-band devices or directly into stick-to-skin wearables with microfluidics embedded into the adhesive.

Applications and Products Redefining Healthcare

Linxens' innovation goes beyond just wearables. Their offerings span a wide spectrum of applications aimed at enhancing and accelerating the development of new solutions for connected health and remote monitoring. With over 500 million medical electrodes produced and more than 15 million medical wearables delivered, Linxens combines expertise and innovation to ensure that product designs meet rigorous medical standards while keeping costs under control for expected mass-volume production.

Gamma Sensory Stimulation Improves Alzheimer’s Symptoms

Cognito Therapeutics gamma sensory stimulation reduces white matter atrophy of Alzheimer’s patients.

Cognito Therapeutics, announced today that its proprietary gamma sensory stimulation at 40Hz over 6 months reduced white matter atrophy in the brain for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, according to new data presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2022.

“These results continue to build on our knowledge and understanding of how gamma frequency patterns in the brain are disrupted in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, and how our technology restores the levels of neural activity to improve cognition.”

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. Although white matter atrophy is observed in normal aging, it is more pronounced in AD patients. White matter degeneration, myelin loss, and oligodendrocyte damage in AD patients suggest that white matter can be a mechanistically important target for AD.

The data presented from the OVERTURE study and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI1) database, suggest that Cognito’s 40 Hzgamma sensory stimulation therapy for 6 months may reduce white matter atrophy, protect axons, and possibly prevent myeline and oligodendrocyte damage in AD patients. Given the crucial role of white matter connecting expansive brain regions, preventing or reducing its atrophy may diminish AD disease progression.

The OVERTURE study treatment group participants received 1 hour of Cognito’s daily 40Hz simultaneous auditory-visual sensory stimulation at home for 6 months with placebo group participants receiving sham stimulation. Analysis between the groups suggested a difference in white matter atrophy favoring the treatment group. To compare the treatment group with a larger control group, Cognito studied ADNI1 data as well.

The OVERTURE study treatment group participants exhibited a 0.38±0.82 percentage increase and ADNI1 study participants exhibited a -2.45±0.40 percentage decrease in white matter volume after 6 months (p<0.004).

“Our proprietary gamma sensory stimulation therapy for 6 months was shown to reduce white matter atrophy, and potentially protect axons, prevent myelin and oligodendrocyte damage in Alzheimer’s patients,” said Brent Vaughan, Chief Executive Officer, Cognito Therapeutics. “These results continue to build on our knowledge and understanding of how gamma frequency patterns in the brain are disrupted in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, and how our technology restores the levels of neural activity to improve cognition.”

“Given the crucial role of white matter connecting expansive brain regions, preventing or reducing its atrophy may diminish disease progression. These results presented at AAIC indicate that our therapy can potentially improve outcomes for patients with Alzheimer’s and Mild Cognitive Impairment, as well as other neurodegenerative diseases that involve loss of white matter and myelination,” added Mihaly Hajos, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Cognito Therapeutics.

Lucid Hearing: OTC Hearing Aids

Lucid Hearing is celebrating first anniversary of FDA approval of its over-the-counter hearing aids.

Lucid Hearing, a global leader in advanced hearing technology and audio solutions, is marking the October first anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration's approval of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids by looking back on the progress seen in the OTC market.

The overarching question is whether the FDA accomplished its goal to increase the public's access to hearing aids and improve hearing for adults impaired with mild to moderate hearing loss. To help gain insights, Lucid Hearing conducted a patient survey, sent to OTC purchasers, and a blind survey sent to respondents nationwide between 35-65 years old.

Accessibility

According to the FDA, despite the high number of people affected by hearing loss, only about one-fifth of those who could benefit from hearing aids sought a solution before OTC. From their patient survey, Lucid Hearing learned: 50% of those who purchased OTC products are new hearing aid wearers, indicating the ruling is positively impacting the number of those getting help.

  •  50% of those who purchased OTC products did not get a hearing test prior to purchasing their hearing aids, revealing a higher degree of consumer accessibility.
  • 90% of OTC wearers reported a positive improvement in their lives, demonstrating benefit from hearing aid intervention that may not have happened otherwise.
  • Of those who had not purchased, over 50% were aware OTC hearing aids are available at retailers.
  • OTC products are being purchased across all categories of retail partners, including mass market, pharmacy, electronics, and grocery.

Affordability

Survey results showed that over half of respondents were aware that OTC products cost less than traditional prescription hearing aids. Lucid Hearing launched its OTC lineup to offer affordability. The opening price point starts at $199, with more premium products ranging from $599 to $1,299.This includes the recently released ultra-premium Tala™, which features the company's new proprietary Precision Directional Listening System.

Educate to Correct Misperceptions

While inroads toward access and affordability are being achieved, the national survey also showed the primary reason people have not purchased yet is a perception that OTC devices may be of lesser quality than prescription devices. This could indicate an industry need to continue educating about OTC devices and help consumers understand that 1) testing is still highly encouraged to determine the accurate degree of hearing loss to ensure the hearing aids selected are appropriate, and 2) OTC devices are solely for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

"This past year has been a success in building more awareness about hearing health. We've seen strength in our prescription business in our almost 500 Sam's Clubs locations and in OTC with retail partners across our distribution network," said Jason Kidd, president and COO of Lucid Hearing. "With over 50 percent of the general population in our survey being aware of the OTC category at the one-year mark, the launch of the OTC market has exceeded our expectations. But more work needs to be done to help people understand how OTC devices work and who they can help. We're honored and excited to be a part of this journey."

Accolades and Donations

A long-time player in the hearing aid market, Lucid Hearing's roots and research go back well before the OTC market launched a year ago. Similar to its prescription offerings, deep expertise in research and development went into its OTC lineup, including work done in conjunction with the University of Texas at Dallas to develop the pre-set programming that serves as the foundation for the company's OTC products.

The company's efforts have not gone unrecognized, as Lucid Hearing is receiving industry accolades and recognition from sources like Forbes Health, Hearing Advisor, and the Stevie Awards, where the company's OTC products took prizes in the Health & Pharmaceuticals-Product and Emerging Technology categories.

Related: AI-Powered and OTC Hearing Aids With Speech Extraction

To celebrate this milestone year, Lucid Hearing has embarked on a number of local philanthropic initiatives in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. Further advancing accessibility, the company has donated over $150,000 in hearing aids to local organizations serving low-income communities and supporting audiological education efforts. Additionally, to promote awareness of Lucid Hearing's overall mission of hearing health, the company distributed hearing protection to alumni attendees from the Universities of Oklahoma and Texas for the Red River Rivalry football game during the State Fair of Texas.

"This past year, being able to serve patients with both prescription and OTC products has allowed us to make tremendous progress in support of our mission to help people hear better," said Tim Schnell, Lucid Hearing Founder and CEO. "On top of the hundreds of thousands we have helped in our hearing centers over the past decade, we are now pleased to help those with mild to moderate hearing loss nationally and serve our local community. We look forward to what the future holds as we advance our efforts in delivering accessible hearing health and treatment to more people than ever before."

About Lucid Hearing

Since its founding in 2009, Lucid Hearing's mission has been to advance hearing healthcare holistically across its family of brands that encompass hearing enhancement, enjoyment, protection, detection, and wellness. Lucid Hearing's dedicated licensed hearing professionals provide free hearing tests and prescriptions to match a consumer's specific hearing loss at one of almost 500 Lucid Hearing centers or through their OTC partnerships with Amazon, Best Buy, Brandsmart, CVS, HSN, Kroger, Sam's Club, and Walmart.

Meta continues to produce some of the top VR devices available.

The Meta Quest 3 is a major improvement over the Quest 2. It is just superior in every way: more cozy, more potent, simpler to understand, more enjoyable to use for extended periods of time, etc. That settles all of your questions about the newest headset from Meta. Even if you bought a Quest 2 only a few years ago and may not have used it as much as you thought you may, the passthrough improvements alone make this an upgrade that is beneficial. The hardware in Quest 3 is remarkable and significantly better than it was in Quests 1 and 2.

The Quest 3 is sometimes referred to in Meta as "the first mainstream mixed reality headset." The Quest 2 starts at $299.99. However, at $499.99 for the 128GB device and $649.99 for the 512GB variant, it is still on the right side of the too-expensive line, especially when compared to Apple's upcoming $3,500 Vision Pro. And unlike the mixed reality products from Magic Leap, Microsoft, and many others, this one is genuinely available for individual purchase by consumers. However, Meta would really like for this to be more than just the greatest affordable headset. It wants the Quest 3 to be the one that significantly increases interest in, use of, and development for mixed reality.

Additionally, Meta reduced the size of its Touch Plus controllers by eliminating the sensor rings that made the earlier model bulky and occasionally difficult to store. The manufacturer claims that the improved sensors on the headgear plus some AI/machine-learning upgrades that can better predict your hand and finger movements are what allowed it to do this.

The haptics in the new controllers are substantially more realistic, in addition to being much more convenient. In other circumstances, they feel substantial and tactile, giving me comforting feedback when I push a virtual button or charge a blaster. However, sometimes they can still feel like old Nokia phones buzzing when games trigger the most basic vibrations.

More sensors and cameras

The two new RGB cameras and depth projector might make it obvious that the Quest 3 is designed for mixed reality experiences if Meta's marketing didn't already. With the new headset, you can more accurately reproduce your surroundings in full color and measure how close and far away objects are, reports ZDNet.

Professional-looking pancake lenses Users will be happy to discover that the 4K+ Infinity Display pancake lenses seen on Meta's more costly VR headset are now present on the Quest 3, and for almost a third of what the Quest Pro originally went for. This greatly enhances the sharpness and detail of text and images while also widening your field of vision (FOV), or how much of the screen you can see from one corner to the other. A new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, which promises to deliver 2x better graphics performance than the Quest 2, powers the displays and the overall system.

Blucap Unveils New Navigation Sunglasses

Blucap has launched a new pair of sunglasses especially designed for the motorcycle riders.

Blucap, the pioneering smart eyewear brand, developed the Blucap Moto navigation sunglasses, creating a new way of navigation and riding experience for motorcycle enthusiasts.

A Revolutionary Motorcycle Navigation

Blucap Moto is a navigation device that displays information directly in front of the rider's line of sight. It offers a distraction-free experience, with turn arrows that only appear when needed. In the name of navigation glasses, Blucap Moto stands out for its map navigation, which can be controlled with a handlebar remote, meeting all your navigation needs in complex road conditions.

In addition, Blucap Moto connects to phones via Bluetooth, eliminating the need to keep the phone screen on when using its navigation features. Riders can choose to keep their phones in a bag or pocket, avoiding the inconvenience of mounting the phone on a holder and potential issues like camera lens vibration damage, rain damage, phone overheating, and battery consumption.

Related: CardoSystems-509 to Transform Motorcycle Helmets

With Blucap Moto, riders can ride safely and without distractions, enjoying an immersive riding experience without the need to look down at their phones.

A tiny MicroLED display then projects a directional arrow onto the inside of the right-hand lens whenever the user comes to an intersection where they must turn. Once the turn has been made, that arrow immediately vanishes.

Pushing a button on the remote temporarily displays a monochrome map segment with the user's position marked on it so they can see where they are on a street map. Incoming calls, text messages, and speed limit notifications can all be displayed on the app. A linked Bluetooth headset from a third party can be used to answer the calls, reports New Atlas.

Having said that, the Motos are made to be incredibly straightforward and uncluttered. They have no buttons or other physical controls, and when their arms are opened, they automatically turn on and link to the phone or remote. According to reports, its internal lithium battery can last for 10 hours of use on a single charge, while a pair of button cell batteries should power the remote for roughly six months.

A neutral pair of fixed inner lenses is included in the eyewear, which can be combined with a variety of adjustable outer lenses. They include a set of tinted, anti-fog, polarized, scratch-resistant outer lenses that completely block UVA and UVB rays. And certainly, prescription lenses may be obtained with them.

Price and Availability

A set of the Blucap Moto sunglasses may be yours for $299 on Kickstarter, provided that the project is successful in moving through with production. Their $399 suggested retail price has been set.

Wireless Handheld Whole-Body Ultrasound Scanner

Clarius PAL HD3 is a wireless handheld whole-body ultrasound scanner.

Emergency physicians attending the ACEP23 conference in Philadelphia this week will be the first to see the new Clarius PAL HD3, a wireless handheld whole-body ultrasound scanner combining phased and line arrays on a single head. This device offers superior image quality and exceptional versatility for real-time imaging of both superficial and deep anatomy at the bedside, making it suitable for a wide range of clinical applications while improving workflow continuity. It's as compact as an iPhone and works seamlessly with iOS or Android devices, ensuring easy mobility from patient to patient. Clarius PAL HD3 has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is available in the United States for 5395 USD plus 595 for the first year of membership.

"The Clarius PAL is a big breakthrough for Clarius and for clinical ultrasound in general. Integrating the phased and linear array means you only need one transducer for 95 to 99% of the studies at the bedside," says Dr. Tom Cook, an emergency physician and ultrasound educator who practices in South Carolina. "I work at a hospital with a big trauma center and being able to carry just one scanner to the bedside to get the best high-quality image to scan every part of the body in a few minutes is incredibly powerful. Everybody's very, very excited about it in my department."

With the broadest frequency range in a handheld ultrasound scanner, Clarius PAL HD3 is the only whole-body handheld scanner to deliver high-resolution images from the skin down to 40 cm of depth. Clarius PAL HD3 is the 11th wireless handheld ultrasound scanner in the Clarius specialty ultrasound lineup.

"The best thing about the Clarius PAL is it really does everything I need on a shift," says Dr. Oron Frenkel, an emergency physician who practices in the United States and Canada. "I don't ever have to reach for the cart to augment my practice. There is no situation that I can imagine where the scanner wouldn't be able to deliver what I need, either on the same patient, if I need to scan different parts of them during a single presentation, or going from bed to bed during a shift."

INSTAX Pal: Fujifilm’s Palm-Top Size Camera

Fujifilm has launched Instax Pal, a tiny palm-top-sized Instax camera.

FUJIFILM announced the launch of “INSTAX Pal™” on October 5th, 2023. It is a palm-top size camera to join the INSTAX series of instant cameras, allowing users to take photos anytime and anywhere. It will be available in five colors to suit different lifestyles, broadening the scope of shooting situations and experiences.

The toy-like camera features a 4.9-megapixel, 1/5-inch-typeCMOS sensor with a primary color filter, offers auto shutter speeds between 1/4to 1/8000 seconds, has ISO100 to 1,600 light sensitivity, sports a F2.2wide-angle lens, and its Li-ion battery is topped up over USB-C.

Released on the same day, silicone cases with strap carabiners in matching colors to INSTAX Pal, and the “Soft Lavender” mini-format film in purple, combining flamboyance with elegance, the company said in a press release.

The INSTAX instant photo system marks its 25th anniversary this year since its original launch in 1998. The system evolved with time, embracing trends and new technologies, to expand its lineup from analog instant cameras to hybrid instant cameras and smartphone printers. The INSTAX series offers diverse ways of enjoying photography to broaden its user base covering young people and middle-aged groups.

The new INSTAX Pal is INSTAX series’ first model specializing in taking pictures. Removal of the printing function has made it possible to reduce the size to a palm-top level for even greater walk-around capacity.

Related: The World’s Smallest Action Camera

The INSTAX Pal features a variety of functions to facilitate shooting situations and photographic experiences. The Standard mode, activated by pressing the shutter button on the rear panel, takes advantage of the wide-angle lens to shoot from an elevated position or at a sharp angle, difficult to achieve with smartphones, using just one hand to capture a dynamic image that brings in more of the background. The Remote mode connects the camera to a smartphone installed with a dedicated app via Bluetooth so that pictures can be checked on the smartphone as they are taken. The Interval mode takes photos continuously at a three-second interval. These features set this camera apart from smartphones with unique shooting experiences. The INSTAX Pal can also establish a Bluetooth connection with the INSTAX Link series of smartphone printers to produce INSTAX prints out of images taken with it.

Fujifilm will continue to expand the world of the “INSTAX” instant photo system that allows people to enjoy on-the-spot photo printing.

Zotac VR GO 4.0: Backpack PC for Mobile VR

Some regions now sell Zotac's VR Go 4.0 backpack PC, which the company first unveiled last year.

The majority of people have probably forgotten about PC manufacturers' efforts to give premium mobile VR in backpacks, but Zotac persisted in the concept. The fourth-generation VR Go system's recent release indicates the device has at least found a market.

Some regions now sell Zotac's VR Go 4.0 backpack PC, which the company first unveiled at Computex last year. While pricing and availability information hasn't yet surfaced in the US, UK dealers are now offering one of two SKUs for £3,699, or about $4,688, without the headset (link may be restricted for non-EU IP addresses).

The GPU is the only distinction between the new models. Both VR Go 4.0 SKUs switched to professional Ampere cards, the A2000 and A4500, representing a shift away from gamers and toward developers and other enterprise users. The previous VR Go 3.0 featured an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, reports TechSpot.

In addition, compared to the previous generation, there have been considerable improvements to the CPU, storage, and connection. The latest offering from Zotac has more USB 3.0 ports, Windows 11 Pro, an Intel Corei7-11800H processor, and a 512GB NVMe SSD (whose PCIe generation is unknown). Users can upgrade the DDR4 memory from the factory-set 16GB to 32GB and add more SATA-based storage.

Users shouldn't anticipate an exceptionally long battery life because the hardware is relatively high-end by most standards, especially for a mobile machine. The two provided batteries, which are hot-swappable and upgradeable, only give you about 50 minutes of playtime, as you might expect. The device, like other backpack PCs, may be taken from its straps and operated on a desk like a standard mini desktop tower.

Related: Virtuix Announces 'Omni One' VR Treadmill Release Date

During the initial surge in enthusiasm for VR and AR in the middle of the 2010s, Zotac began to release backpack PCs for mobile VR gaming alongside other firms like HP and MSI. The VR Go series from Zotac may have found a steady professional user base, but their exorbitant prices on top of the flagship headsets prevented them from being widely adopted.

Furthermore, the basic concept isn't all that unlike the experience Apple is attempting to deliver with its impending Vision Pro. However, the so-called "Spatial Computer" from Cupertino Giant will be smaller hardware that prioritizes AR over VR. However, it will still cost several thousand dollars and require a user-strapped external battery, likely posing the same challenges as the older backpack PCs until Apple's reputation and software ecosystem set it apart.

First-in-Human Implant to Restore Arm Function

The Netherlands-based Onward Medical announced that it completed the first-in-human implant.

Onward Medical announced that it completed the first-in-human implant of its ARC-IM stimulator for restoring upper extremity function.

Eindhoven, The Netherlands-based Onward designed the stimulator to restore function after spinal cord injury (SCI). The patient also received a wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) for initiating thought-driven movement when paired with ARC-IM.

ONWARD ARC-IM delivers targeted, programmed ARC-IM Therapy to the spinal cord to restore movement and other functions after spinal cord injury. ARC-IM Therapy has been applied across multiple clinical feasibility studies to restore mobility and stabilize blood pressure after SCI. For the first time, ARC-IM Therapy has now also been used to restore upper extremity movement and function.

Two procedures were performed last month by neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch, MD, at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The ARC-IM implant procedure took place on August 14, 2023, and nine days later the BCI WIMAGINE® from CEA-Clinatec was implanted.

Working in concert with ARC-IM, the BCI is engineered to capture the intention of a paralyzed individual to move their upper extremities and uses artificial intelligence to decode those thoughts. ARC-IM then converts the decoded information into ARC-IM Therapy - precise stimulation of the spinal cord - resulting in thought-driven movement.

“The implant procedures involving the ONWARD ARC-IM and Clinatec BCI went smoothly,” said Dr. Jocelyne Bloch. “We are now working with the patient to use this cutting-edge innovation to recover movement of his arms, hands, and fingers. We look forward to sharing more information in due course.”

This latest breakthrough is part of an ongoing clinical study investigating the safety and effectiveness of thought-initiated spinal cord stimulation after SCI. It builds on the ONWARD announcement from May 2023 that pairing its ARC Therapy with a BCI implant resulted in an individual gaining augmented control over the movement of his paralyzed legs. The study is supported by a grant from the European Innovation Council (Reverse Paralysis project) and is coordinated by NeuroRestore co-Directors – Professor GrégoireCourtine and Dr. Jocelyne Bloch – as well as Guillaume Charvet, head of the Medical Device Development Lab at CEA-Clinatec.

Related: Cala Health's Neurostimulation System Treats Parkinson's

“This is another impressive piece of research from our partners at NeuroRestore. We are excited to learn how ARC-IM Therapy may restore upper extremity function after SCI, and we are eager to see how the addition of a BCI might augment our therapy,” said Dave Marver, CEO of ONWARD.“Congratulations to the teams at EPFL, CHUV, and CEA-Clinatec for this breakthrough. We feel privileged that our technology is part of this research.”

The Company expects to share more information about this pioneering research in the coming months, concurrent with a peer-reviewed publication describing the procedure and results.

About ONWARD Medical

ONWARD is a medical technology company creating therapies to restore movement, function, and independence in people with spinal cord injury(SCI) and movement disabilities. Building on more than a decade of science and preclinical research conducted at leading neuroscience laboratories, the Company has received nine Breakthrough Device Designations from the US Food and Drug Administration for its ARC Therapy platform.
