Elon Musk’s Neuralink Raises $280 Million

Neuralink, the biotech startup owned by Elon Musk, raised $280 million in a funding round.

The biotechnology startup Neuralink, owned by Elon Musk, raised $280 million in a funding round, the company revealed on Monday via X, the platform owned by Musk that replaced Twitter.

The controversial billionaire and cofounder of PayPal, Peter Thiel, founded Founders Fund, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, which took the lead in the Series D investment.

“We’re extremely excited about this next chapter at Neuralink,” the company wrote.

Musk has been working on this project for the past five years, and the brain chip business intends to employ implants to connect your brain to a computer. The business, which until this point had exclusively conducted animal testing, has come under fire after a monkey died during project testing in 2022 while being trained to play the computer game Pong, reports CNN.

Neuralink has been creating Bluetooth-enabled implantable chips that can be placed into macaque monkeys' brains and, according to the company, can communicate with computers via a small receiver.

The financial information was revealed months after Musk declared that the business would begin conducting human trials. At a hiring event in December, the billionaire said that Neuralink had "most" of its paperwork submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration and could start human testing in six months.

However, according to a December article by Reuters, staff claim the corporation is rushing to market, which has led to irresponsible animal deaths and a federal probe.

Neuralink's brain implants will require regulatory approval before they are mass-produced and made available to the general public. In 2021, the FDA published a document outlining the organization's preliminary conclusions about brain-computer interface devices, saying that the industry is"progressing rapidly."

Neuralink posted a tweet on Monday informing followers that they were hiring and inviting them to "join in on engineering challenges to restore vision and mobility."

DJI Osmo Action 4 Review: A Powerful GoPro Rival

The DJI Action 4 is a capable action camera that checks all the necessary boxes.

Version 4 of the DJI Osmo Action 3 has been released less than a year after its debut. This action camera guarantees superior low-light performance, better stabilization choices, and increased durability.

Compared to version 3, the DJI Osmo Action 4's sensor is substantially bigger, measuring 1/1.3". This causes the pixel size to rise from 1.6 to 2.4 meters. The lens has the same 155° Field of View and f/2.8aperture as before. The 10-bit sensor can record 4k footage at up to 120fps according to DJI and is claimed to improve overall image quality, reports The Verge.

The Action 4's circular lens cover, which stands out from the rest of the GoPro lineup the most despite having a larger sensor, appears to be about the same size.

You can shoot in 10-bit D-Log M format to get the best quality out of it. You can capture more before you need to transfer the information to a computer because the camera now accepts microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 512GB (up from 256GB). The Action 4 can capture 4K video at 120 fps and up to 130 Mbps, the same as its predecessor. You can shoot in 10-bitD-Log M format to get the best quality out of it. You can capture more before you need to transfer the information to a computer because the camera now accepts microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 512GB (up from 256GB).

To maintain the image's stability and eliminate image bounce, Rock Steady 3.0 technology and 360-degree Horizon Steady stabilization are used. Compared to the 148 degrees seen on the GoPro Hero 11, the 155-degree field of view offers a broader visual spread.

The DJI Invisi Stick feature is also available on the Action4 if you enjoy taking artistic photographs. This eliminates the selfie stick from the video.

This may be a helpful feature because many riders are experimenting with shooting in ways other than the standard POV (point of view)of a chest or helmet cam.

Similar to mounting Action 3, Action 4 can be mounted. The camera is positioned in landscape mode thanks to a magnetic mounting device on the bottom. Here again, the superior magnetic latching mounting method is utilized. Although it doesn't appear to have altered at all, it continues to be convenient. If you purchase a few extra baseplates, swapping between mounts is significantly quicker than removing the conventional GoPro-style thumbscrews.

This model's resistance to water has improved; it can now be submerged up to 18 meters without extra housing. Since I spend most of my time on dry land, it doesn't really matter to me, but for diving fanatics, it might be a significant concern. Open-water divers can dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters for recreational purposes, thus those who participate can use their cameras carefree on any dive.

According to DJI, the Multifunctional Battery Case is a flexible power bank that can simultaneously charge up to three Osmo Action 4 batteries. Additionally, this can be used to charge other USB-powered gadgets.

It can be purchased independently or as a component of the Adventure Combo bundle, which costs $499/£469 and includes the Osmo Action 4 and a number of accessories.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 is available now and is priced at £379/$399.

Asus ROG Ally Review: Outstanding PC Gaming

At $700, Asus ROG Ally may appear way more intrinsic than the Steam Deck.

Given that Asus is one of the most well-known brands in the PC hardware industry, it's not surprising that they were the first significant hardware manufacturer to introduce a portable gaming PC. It is up to the industry's titans to make the commandeering push and propel handheld gaming PCs into the mainstream, despite the fact that smaller boutique firms from China have ignited the entire handheld gaming PC mania.

With its Steam Deck, Valve may have been one of the most unexpected participants. The Steam Deck was an immediate hit for many people thanks to its unique software designed specifically for the company's good-grade hardware at a competitive price.

Despite having no prior expertise in developing hardware goods, Valve has been able to capture the attention of the larger gaming community with the Steam Deck. Can Asus take up Valve's mantle and convince the public that portable PCs are the way of the PC gaming future? In our assessment of the Asus ROG Ally, let's examine this.

The Asus ROG Ally appears blatantly gamey in terms of design. If the two analog sticks aren't sufficient cues, then the handheld's principal use should be evident from the device's sharp edges, speaker grilles with acute angles, RGB rings surrounding the analog sticks, and holographic stickers with the ROG logo on their outside corners, reports TechSpot

Fortunately, Asus didn't go overboard; designers made sure the corners weren't too harsh for comfort. Moreover, fortunately, the Ally just has two RGB rings. While the backside has two paddle buttons, dual air intakes, and another holographic sticker, the top has shoulder buttons, triggers, and a variety of ports. Additionally, there are two broad air exhausts on top.

Compared to the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally is lighter and smaller. It is considerably simpler to hold for prolonged periods of time without support or to take around in a backpack and never seems as intimidating in the hand. This has the disadvantage of being slightly less gripping; in contrast to the ROG Ally, the Steam Deck has thick grips that give your fingers something to hold onto. The ROG Ally's compactness required a trade-off, but people with larger hands will find the Steam Deck more comfortable.

The RGB lighting on the ROG Ally is confined to the rings around the joysticks. There are only two zones in each ring, yet the colors complement one another wonderfully. Fortunately, the illumination is set to a much lower intensity out of the box and may be entirely muted. It can still grow very bright, much brighter than the panel itself. Additionally, you may configure the illumination to match CPU utilization or temperature as well as your music or compatible games.

There is a lot going on at the device's top. The power button serves as both the fingerprint scanner and the power button. Then, just next to the volume controls, there are two status LEDs for power and charging. A huge port has a USB-C connector and an exclusive Asus connector for external GPUs. Finally, there is a headphone jack and a microSD card slot.

Even in the already specialized market for handheld consoles, the Ally is undoubtedly a niche device. This device will undoubtedly satisfy your very unique gaming itch if you are an experienced PC player who simply cannot spend enough time in front of your PC but needs a solution to continue playing your games whenever and wherever. To appeal to a wider audience, it will need improved software and longer battery life.

Pros

·       Good build quality, reasonably small, and lightweight.

·       Great performance on the display.

·       Performance from the Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU that is best in class.

·       Controls on the gamepad that are convenient and effective.

·       Good cooling results.

·       Software that is flexible and unrestrictive.

Cons

·       Battery life is not impressive.

·       UI experience was poor.

·       Awkward positioning of the fingerprint sensor.

·       Minimal haptics.

Meta’s New AI Tool for Music Generation

Meta released AudioCraft, their open-source platform for producing high-quality, realistic audio.

Imagine being able to experiment with new compositions as a professional musician without having to play a single note on an instrument. Or a small business owner easily adding music to their most recent Instagram video advertisement. Meta’s most recent AI tool, AudioCraft, which creates high-quality, realistic audio and music from text, makes that promise.

The solution fills a gap in the market for generative AI, where audio production has traditionally lagged behind. Although there has already been considerable progress in this area, the corporation notes that the current solutions are quite difficult to use, not very open, and difficult to access for experimentation.

AudioCraft consists of three models: MusicGen, AudioGen, and EnCodec. MusicGen, which was trained with Meta-owned and specifically licensed music, generates music from text prompts, while AudioGen, which was trained in public sound effects, generates audio from text prompts.

“Today, we’re excited to release an improved version of our EnCodec decoder, which allows higher quality music generation with fewer artifacts. We’re also releasing our pre-trained AudioGen models, which let you generate environmental sounds and sound effects like a dog barking, cars honking, or footsteps on a wooden floor. And lastly, we’re sharing all of the AudioCraft model weights and code,” Meta said on its website.

According to Meta, it offers users "the full recipe to play with the existing models" that Meta has been building over the last years, simplifying the overall creation of generative models for audio compared to earlier work in the field.

Compared to models created for photos, video, and text, the new tools aim to address the difficulties in the field of AI audio production. Meta noted that it has been difficult to simulate the complexity of audio signals and patterns at various scales, notably for music.

“Music is arguably the most challenging type of audio to generate as it’s composed of local and long-range patterns, from a suite of notes to a global musical structure with multiple instruments,” the company said.

Related: Meta Buys 3D Smart Glass Maker Luxexcel

According to Meta, the user-friendly design of AudioCraft enables artists and makers to get ideas, brainstorm, and iterate on songs in creative ways.

Meta envisions that MusicGen could potentially evolve into a new type of instrument, akin to the impact synthesizers had when they first emerged.

Meta's AudioCraft is anticipated to compete with Google's MusicLM, a program that was released to the public in May and can likewise produce high-fidelity music from text input and humming.

Korean Metaverse Creation Platform Obtains Patent

Redbrick has obtained a patent that enhances connectivity and scalability between metaverse platform

Metaverse creation platform Redbrick announced that it has obtained a patent for the 'Open Metaverse Creation System', a technology that enhances connectivity and scalability between metaverse platforms, in Korea.

The 'Open Metaverse Creation System' is a technology that allows creators' metaverse creations to be linked in another metaverse space, and the creator's creation profits generated from all linked metaverses to be settled at one time. In previous metaverses, only users of a platform could make an access to the platform with no linkage between existing metaverses, while the current patent allows such linkage, the company said in a press release.

The 'Open Metaverse Creation System' provides a function that enables uploading content created by creators to other metaverse platforms and a function that enables transactions of goods such as purchasing items through self-regulated marketplaces without registering them in other marketplaces, such as the App Store or Play Store. These functions make creators to settle profits easily and conveniently as well as show their own content on multiple metaverse platforms.

Companies using a metaverse will also obtain higher accessibility and convenience in content production. Without building a settled profit easily and conveniently and a separate platform, companies can upload metaverse content on their web or app through the Open Metaverse SDK (Software Development Kit), after producing own creations in Redbrick Studio, a web-based engine developed by Redbrick. 'RedbrickStudio', as Redbrick's software creation tool that anyone with no knowledge of coding can use to create a metaverse and produce content, provides a settlement function that facilitates handling profits from creations, including metaverse games based on block coding and text coding editors.

With this patent registration, Redbrick is planning to further accelerate collaboration with various companies that use metaverses. We are currently collaborating with IPX on Open Metaverse, and any business operator who wants to use Redbrick's Open Metaverse SDK can work jointly with Redbrick.

Redbrick CEO YANG Young-mo said, "Obtaining a patent for the open metaverse has its significance in that it will facilitate an access to all parts of the metaverse world", and "Redbrick will continue to expand the scalability of the platform based on the introduction of various technologies."

Spiral Wearable Monitors Brain Activity From Inside Ear Canal

Researchers at Tsinghua University developed new BCI applications.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) often include scalp-applied or even brain-implanted electrodes, serving a variety of beneficial applications. However, if a new, less intrusive BCI is required, it can easily be inserted into the patient's ear canal.

The SpiralE is an experimental device created by a group of researchers from Tsinghua University in China. It is a tiny multilayered rectangular strip that is just 50 mm long and 3 mm broad, comprised of two shape-memory polymer layers, one electrothermal actuation layer, and one EEG(electroencephalogram) layer. The corkscrew-like initial twist of the strip makes it possible to put it quickly and readily into the patient's broader ear canal.

Once the device is in place, an electrical field outside of it is exposed to it, which causes a Joule heating process to occur in the electrothermal actuation layer. The shape-memory polymers in the strip try to return to a flat, uncurled condition as a result of the heat produced, reports New Atlas.

As a result, the strip begins to uncurl, but the inner ear canal walls continue to hold it in a less tightly curled position. Thus, where it can easily pick up electrical impulses from the brain, its EEG electrode layer is placed up against the skin of the ear canal.

Related: Tiny Wireless Battery-Free Implant for Optogenetics Illuminates Neuron Activity in the Brain

The device was shown to be pleasant to wear for extended periods of time in lab tests, and it demonstrated up to 95% accuracy in detecting volunteers' brain activity. The researchers are hopeful that it may eventually be put to use in applications like monitoring patients' sleep patterns or identifying epilepsy or tiredness.

The study team believes that the SpiralE's simplicity of usage may pave the way for new BCI applications. They foresee the creation of software tools that can translate entire ideas into writing, command virtual and actual world things, and possibly even create enhanced memories.

Medicine Cabinet gives people easy-to-use tools to keep track of their prescriptions, get refills and daily pill reminders, find low prices, and earn rewards for staying on track. By making prescription management easier, smarter, and more relevant, Medicine Cabinet will better enable consumers to stay adherent to their treatment plans and manage their overall healthcare costs.

Medication adherence is key to improving health outcomes, managing chronic conditions, and decreasing spend in the healthcare system. An estimated 50% of all American adults struggle to take their medications as prescribed, and lack of affordability is a contributing reason why 20-30% of prescriptions are never filled. Adherence becomes even more challenging when patients have multiple prescriptions, reports BusinessWire.

In fact, early data shows that GoodRx users who engage with Medicine Cabinet are almost four times as likely to claim prescriptions at the pharmacy than non-registered users. Furthermore, these users are managing more prescriptions within the GoodRx app, leading to more than 40% more prescriptions filled than non-registered users in the first six months after first filling a medication.

“It’s no secret that an important part of staying healthy is sticking to your prescribed treatment plan, but that’s often easier said than done. Tracking a variety of medicines and remembering when to take them is a real challenge. But for many Americans, it gets even harder juggling refills, navigating multiple pharmacies, and managing costs,” said Mark Hull, Chief Product Officer of GoodRx. “With Medicine Cabinet, we are addressing these hurdles by making medication management easier and giving consumers more control over their prices, leveraging much of the prescription history consumers already have on GoodRx. While other solutions focus solely on alerts, with GoodRx’s Medicine Cabinet, you can actually save more money just by adhering to your medications.”

Prescriptions filled using GoodRx will automatically populate in the Medicine Cabinet, saving time and the work of entering information manually. Onyx is still fighting for e-reading, however, it might be more accurate to refer to its products as E Ink Android tablets given that they don't have the same locked-down operating systems as reMarkable's tablets or Amazon's Kindle e-readers. The Boox Tab Ultra C, is one of Onyx's most recent models.

The Boox Tab Ultra, which was introduced in April, is essentially a colored variant of the ReMarkable 2 or the Kindle Scribe digital tablets from Amazon. Similar features are available on the Tab Mini C, which is smaller and more portable.

You receive a 7.8-inch Kaleido 3 E Ink screen instead of a10.3-inch ePaper display, which can display 4,096 colors at 150 PPI (702 x 936)resolution or 300 PPI (1,404 x 1,872) for text and graphics in black and white, reports NewAtlas.

According to Onyx, the small tablet was created "to enhance the enjoyment of reading colorful novels, manga, web pages, and other content." The capacitive touch display offers 4,096 pressure sensitivity levels, Boox Super Refresh Technology is built-in for four task-optimized refresh modes, and there is a dual-tone front light to promote work after hours. The company's Pen Plus stylus is included with the tablet and may be used for note-taking, highlighting, and on-screen navigation.

In order to deliver on the promise of quick and responsive onscreen performance, the snappy Qualcomm Advanced octa-core processor and "exclusive GPU" are supported by 4 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB of UFS2.1 storage. The Tab Mini C has two speakers that can rock out to audiobooks, Android 11 with compatibility for third-party apps, a gyro for automatic screen rotation, Bluetooth 5.0, and dual-band Wi-Fi.

The 5,000-mAh battery should last for a very long time between top-ups thanks to the low power consumption of E Ink, and the ergonomic black metal shell is said to be suitable for "prolonged reading sessions without causing fatigue in the hands." The small tablet measures 0.33 in(8.3 mm) thick and weighs 9.3 oz (264 g) in total.

The Tab Mini C is available now for US$449.99, including the pen stylus and a magnetic cover.

Assassin’s Creed Haptic Shirt Lets You Feel

Ubisoft is attempting to replicate the idea using haptic feedback in a smart shirt.

Ubisoft is attempting to replicate the idea using haptic feedback in a shirt. Since technology hasn't quite caught up to the Animus virtual reality technology used in the Assassin's Creed series, which allows players to experience the brutal history of the brand. You will experience "sensations" like the main character Basim in Assassin's Creed: Mirage when the game debuts on October 12.

A technologically advanced shirt called the OWO Haptic Gaming System is utilized in some VR settings to provide players with tactile feedback on their bodies that corresponds with actions in a game. Even though Assassin's Creed: Mirage isn't a VR game, Ubisoft is collaborating with the maker to create a shirt with the game's emblem and will be adding haptic functionality to all platforms. The haptic feedback in the shirt, according to the OWO website, will allow you to "feel your precise movements when you take down your targets."

By adjusting the waves associated with the various types of feedback accessible in OWO's sensations library, the haptic feedback shirt enables users to experience true physical sensations. The collection of sensations and experiences ranges from knife wounds, severe stomach wounds, and gunshots with exit wounds to wind, tension, and freefall. That sounds like fun, reports TechSpot.

Similar specifications to those of OWO's Founder Limited Edition haptic feedback shirt are anticipated for the Mirage edition when it ships. Ten haptic sensation sites, 100-ohm high conductivity electrodes, Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, and an eight-hour rechargeable USB Type-C battery are all included with the Founder Limited Edition. The Mirage version will also come with extras including an AC-themed Lycra shirt, 20 gel pads, a storage pouch, the OWO gadget, and an Assassin's Creed game code, according to OWO's Assassin's Creed skin page.

The OWO device and My OWO app allow users to personalize their experiences. Every game and user will have a distinct experience thanks to the app's capacity to calibrate and change the sensations and intensities supplied by the skin.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is scheduled for release on October 12 of this year for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Amazon Luna users. The game will also be available to all Ubisoft+ subscribers once released.

Teladoc to Integrate Microsoft AI in its Healthcare Platform

Teladoc Health announced its collaboration with Microsoft to integrate Microsoft AI in its platform.

Teladoc Health, the global leader in whole-person virtual care, today announced it is furthering its collaboration with Microsoft by working together to integrate Microsoft Azure Open AI Service, Azure Cognitive Services, and the Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) into the Teladoc Health Solo™ platform. The integrated solutions will automate the creation of clinical documentation during virtual exams to help ease the burden on the healthcare workforce while improving the quality of shared medical information and the care it supports. The Teladoc Health Medical Group also plans to use Nuance DAX Express for care visits provided directly by Teladoc Health.

“Administrative burden and staff shortages are major reasons why clinicians are leaving the profession,” said Dr. Vidya Raman-Tangella, chief medical officer at Teladoc Health. “We are focused on using AI to reassert and build the doctor-patient relationship at a time when technology frequently does the opposite. We are proud to partner with Microsoft and Nuance to break new ground.”

By 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services predicts that there will be a nationwide shortage of 90,000 physicians worsened by professional burnout related to the demands of electronic paperwork. According to the American Medical Association, physicians spend two hours on administrative tasks for each hour of care provided. A longtime partner to hospitals and health systems, Teladoc Health is committed to helping organizations alleviate workforce burden and improve patient care, particularly within creased access and hybrid workflows like virtual nursing, enabling experienced remote nursing staff to perform nursing responsibilities that do not require physical touch. The company said in a press release that this frees up bedside nurses to focus on hands-on patient care and improving staff satisfaction.

“We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Teladoc Health, leveraging innovative technologies to help make it easier for clinicians to deliver care virtually and enhance the patient experience,” said Tom McGuinness, Corporate Vice President, Global Health & Life Sciences, Microsoft. “Teladoc Health’s integration of Azure Open AI Service and Nuance DAXgives clinicians the tools they need to deliver quality, coordinated care, easing administrative burdens and allowing them to spend more focused time with their patients.”

When integrated into the Teladoc Health Solo platform, Nuance DAX, an ambient clinical documentation solution, will automatically document patient encounters accurately and efficiently at the point of care for final clinician review and signoff. As a result, clinicians can interact with patients more naturally and conversationally without the need to look away to type notes during a telehealth visit.

The Teladoc Health Medical Group will also use Nuance DAXExpress, a workflow-integrated, AI-powered clinical documentation application that is the first to combine Nuance’s proven conversational and ambient AI with the newest and most capable AI model, GPT4, in the Azure OpenAI Service. The use of Nuance DAX Express will provide quick and accurate reporting of encounters to other virtual and community-based clinicians to better coordinate care.

“Adding Nuance DAX and DAX Express into the Teladoc Health ecosystem represents the type of collaborative innovation needed to serve the rapidly changing needs of clinicians and patients across the care continuum,” said Diana Nole, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Healthcare at Nuance, a Microsoft company. “It addresses the pressing challenge of reducing clinicians’ administrative workloads in some of the most demanding and dynamic care environments in healthcare. Moreover, it combines the efficiency and advanced power of conversational, ambient, and generative AI to give physicians the tools and information they need to provide timely, high-quality, reassuring, and personalized care in any location, especially in urgent and virtual care circumstances when patients need it the most.”

Innovative Wearable Sweat Sensor Predicts Muscle Fatigue

Tokyo University of Science Researchers have designed a novel sweat sensor.

A research team from the Tokyo University of Science (TUS) has designed a novel sweat sensor for continuous monitoring of lactate, which is helpful for predicting muscle fatigue.

The work, published online in ACS Sensors on June 15, 2023,describes the use of a technique called "heat-transfer printing" to fix a thin, flexible chloride ion sensor onto a textile substrate. The study was co-authored by Dr. Masahiro Motosuke, Dr. Tatsunori Suzuki, Dr. ShinyaYanagita, and Dr. Takahiro Mukaimoto of TUS.

"The proposed sensor can be transferred to fibersubstrates, and thus can be incorporated into textiles such as T-shirts,wristbands, and insoles," explains Dr. Shitanda. "Further, healthindicators such as chloride ion concentration in sweat can be measured by simply wearing them."

The heat-transfer printing approach offers several advantages. For one thing, the sensor is transferred outside of the piece of clothing, which prevents skin irritation. In addition, the wicking effect of the textile helps spread the sweat evenly between the electrodes of the sensor, creating a stable electrical contact. Moreover, printing the sensor on a flat surface and then transferring it prevents the formation of blurred edges that commonly occur when printing directly onto a textile.

The researchers carefully selected the materials and electrochemical mechanisms of the sensor to avoid risking an allergic reaction for the wearer. After developing the sensor, they conducted various experiments using artificial sweat to verify its accuracy in measuring chloride ion concentration. The change in the electromotive force of the sensor was −59.5mTV/log CCl−. Additionally, it displayed a earnest response and a linear relationship with the concentration range of chloride ions in human sweat. Moreover, no other ions or substances typically present in sweat were found to interfere with the measurements.

Related: Wearable Sweat Sensor Detects Inflammation

Lastly, the team tested the sensor on a volunteer who exercised on a static bicycle for 30 minutes, by measuring their perspiration rate, chloride ion levels in blood, and saliva osmolality every five minutes to compare with the data previously gathered by the sensor. The proposed wearable sensor could reliably measure the concentration of chloride ions in sweat.

The sensor can also transmit data wirelessly, making it useful for real-time health monitoring. "Since chloride is the most abundant electrolyte in human sweat, measuring its concentration provides an excellent indicator of the body's electrolyte balance and a useful tool for the diagnosis and prevention of heat stroke," remarks Dr. Shitanda.

This research thus demonstrates the potential of using wearable ion sensors for the real-time monitoring of sweat biomarkers, facilitating personalized healthcare development and athlete training management.
