Exoneuromusculoskeleton – a multimodal robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation.

The development of rehabilitative devices has seen another milestone at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Specifically intended for stroke patients with hemiplegia, the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is a first-of-its-kind multimodal robot for ankle-foot therapy that enhances lower limb motor function and walking capacity.

About 50,000 new occurrences of stroke are reported to occur in Hong Kong each year, and 85% of patients have some degree of reduced physical mobility. Regaining physical mobility after a stroke is essential for reducing symptoms like impairment. This can be achieved by consistent, rigorous, and repeated rehabilitation training. Accessing daytime outpatient rehabilitation services at nearby hospitals and rehabilitation clinics is difficult, nevertheless, because of the high demand. As a result, stroke victims frequently find it difficult to engage in regular, timely rehabilitation exercises.

Foot drop and inversion are common functional deficits among stroke patients that cause major disruptions to their daily lives. The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is a novel multimodal wearable robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation that combines the benefits of the exoskeleton, soft pneumatic muscles, tactile sensory feedback, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation technology in one system. The research team behind this innovative device is led by Dr. Hu Xiaoling, Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at PolyU. Not only can the gadget efficiently address foot drop and foot inversion, but it can also help stroke patients walk more naturally. Furthermore, it can enhance walking balance and, over time, support rehabilitative neuroplasticity, reports Mirage.

Hemiplegic stroke patients typically have impaired muscle strength and impaired motor function at the affected lower extremity, particularly in the foot and ankle. The gait events of patients, such as standing, heel strike, heel off, and toe-off, can be automatically detected by the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton. With mechanical support from the exoskeleton and soft pneumatic muscles, the device can help a patient stand firmly on their affected foot. It can also improve foot drop by teaching the patient how to balance their plantar pressure and exert propelling force when walking through vibration tactile feedback and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Because of its lightweight design and sporty features, the400g Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is more appropriate for hemiplegic patients to use unilaterally on their own. Patients can practice any time, any place—at home, outdoors, or indoors—with this device's minimal power consumption and four-hour continuous use period on a 9V rechargeable battery. There are other exoskeleton lower-limb robots on the market, but they are not very useful in helping stroke patients with hemiplegia improve their ankle joint and muscle coordination because they only use external force to help patients walk. The high weight and power consumption of these robots also restrict their use in medical facilities such as hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Conventional ankle-foot orthoses have the potential to induce atrophy in the muscles and hinder patients' ability to regain voluntary motor control over the affected leg's ankle.

Dr Hu stated, "Combining the research capabilities of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Centre, School of Fashion and Textiles, and Department of Computing, the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is a testament to PolyU's exceptional strength in interdisciplinary research. This research achievement provides stroke patients a better option for lower limb rehabilitation training, incorporating the training into their daily activities. It also enables therapists to provide tele-supervision of the rehabilitation progress of multiple patients. We hope such flexible self-help training can effectively supplement traditional outpatient rehabilitation services, helping stroke patients achieve more efficient rehabilitation progress."

Motorola’s New Bendable, Wearable Phone

Motorola releases a strange phone that bends backward to encircle your wrist like a bracelet.

Wraparound displays are still relatively new, but foldable phones are starting to become more common. This year's Mobile World Congress included some really amazing technology, such as Motorola's concept phone, the Rizr, whose screen glides across the bottom. One of the most intriguing exhibits at the expo was Motorola's concept phone. Now, the company has gone one step further with flexible displays, releasing a strange phone that bends backward to encircle your wrist like an expensive bracelet.

Motorola's Mobility business unveiled a prototype phone at Lenovo Tech World '23 that features a flexible display that can bend at different angles, enabling it to wrap and twist around your wrist. Known as the "Adaptive Display Concept," it features a pOLED screen with Full HD Plus resolution that can be "bent and shaped into different" forms to accommodate varied situations. The top half curves upward for a more ergonomic viewing experience. This self-standing position presents you with a 4.6-inch display, ideal for video calls, scrolling through social feeds, and other vertical-aligned tasks. The use cases are flexible.

Motorola is essentially using this concept—which is why it is investing R&D resources in it—to demonstrate to consumers that there are alternative, less bulky phone options available besides foldables, such as the Razr 2023. Unlike the leading foldable phones, Motorola's wraparound phone doesn't require an extra hinge, which is one of its best features. Motorola claims that when the 6.9-inch screen is bent in half, it becomes a compact 4.6-inch display. It can either be wrapped around your wrist or stand erect on the bent portion.

Gel-Free ECG Sensor Monitors Heart Health

A team of researchers from RMIT developed a wearable ECG that can help with cardiovascular illness.

By warning users to seek medical attention, ECGs help control cardiovascular disease, which affects almost 4 million Australians and claims the lives of about 100 people every day.

An RMIT University-led team has developed a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) device that may be utilized in ambulatory care and remote healthcare settings to help individuals with cardiovascular illness avoid heart attacks. The RMIT device weighs only 10 grams, in contrast to the several hundred grams that most wearable ECG monitors usually weigh.

The study was published in the journal AIP Applied Physics Reviews.

Lead author PhD scholar Peter Elango from RMIT said heart attacks often occurred with little or no warning, as signals were difficult to spot without continuous monitoring.

“Nearly half of the people who have heart attacks do not realize what’s happening until it’s too late,” Elango said.

“My dream is a world with zero preventable heart attacks.”

Because gold is extremely conductive, biocompatible, and chemically inert, the researchers decided to utilize it as the material for their dry electrode. Their electrodes had a significant surface area-to-volume ratio and were lightweight due to the incorporation of thin gold sheets, which helped with the efficient capture of ECG data. They tried a number of different shapes before deciding on a hexagonal pattern because it better conforms to the skin's natural curves and records ECG signals, reports NewAtlas.

Compared to existing wearable ECG monitors, which usually weigh several hundred grams, the device weighs only 10 g (0.3 oz). The researchers discovered that only three of their ultra-thin electrodes could adequately monitor a person's heart, compared to the usual ECG's twelve electrodes. The precision of the dry electrodes was comparable to that of a conventional 12-lead ECG.

“The dry electrodes, which are less than one-tenth the width of a human hair, are highly sensitive to the cardiac signals of the user,” said Peter Elango, lead and corresponding author of the study.

The electrodes are Bluetooth-enabled wireless devices that connect to an ECG machine. Additionally, they can be applied to parts of the body that you wouldn't normally put them on, such as the back of the neck, which offers benefits despite being uncommon.

The researchers hope to employ their wearable dry electrodes as a preventive medical device as well as in ambulatory care and remote healthcare settings. They can be incorporated into wearable textiles for long-term cardiac monitoring, in addition to being utilized as a stand-alone device.

Smart Socks

A researcher has developed smart socks that can keep dementia under control.

In addition to becoming disoriented, people with dementia may also experience extreme anxiety and even aggression. To prevent these kinds of actions from spiraling out of control, a British scientist created a pair of socks that are packed with sensors.

Dr. Zeke Steer, a roboticist at the University of Bristol, originally had the concept when he saw his own great-grandmother's behavioral issues getting worse as her dementia got worse. Dr. Steer quit his job and took a PhD at Bristol Robotics Laboratory so he could find a way to help people like his great-grandmother, who became anxious and aggressive because of her dementia.

The socks will be a game-changer in care homes and will help people with dementia live longer in their own homes. They look and feel like normal socks, are machine washable, and have received positive reviews in care home tests.

First, caregivers use a smartphone app to scan a QR code on one of the socks. Then, sensors in that sock start tracking the wearer's body movements, sweat, and heart rate continually, reports NewAtlas.

The data is sent wirelessly to a cloud-based server, where real-time machine-learning algorithms evaluate it. An alarm is sent to the caregiver's phone if agitation is observed. After then, they attend to the wearer right away in the hopes of calming them down before things go out of control.

The socks themselves are fully machine-washable and have already been successfully tested in British care homes.

Dr. Steer’s rapidly growing start-up, Milbotix, has attracted pledges worth over £550k  from over 500  investors in Crowdcube’s early access phase.

Investors get equity in Milbotix and their funds help the start-up’s patent-pending SmartSocks reach a global market.

Gamma Sensory Stimulation Improves Alzheimer’s Symptoms

Cognito Therapeutics gamma sensory stimulation reduces white matter atrophy of Alzheimer’s patients.

Cognito Therapeutics, announced today that its proprietary gamma sensory stimulation at 40Hz over 6 months reduced white matter atrophy in the brain for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, according to new data presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2022.

“These results continue to build on our knowledge and understanding of how gamma frequency patterns in the brain are disrupted in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, and how our technology restores the levels of neural activity to improve cognition.”

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. Although white matter atrophy is observed in normal aging, it is more pronounced in AD patients. White matter degeneration, myelin loss, and oligodendrocyte damage in AD patients suggest that white matter can be a mechanistically important target for AD.

The data presented from the OVERTURE study and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI1) database, suggest that Cognito’s 40 Hzgamma sensory stimulation therapy for 6 months may reduce white matter atrophy, protect axons, and possibly prevent myeline and oligodendrocyte damage in AD patients. Given the crucial role of white matter connecting expansive brain regions, preventing or reducing its atrophy may diminish AD disease progression.

The OVERTURE study treatment group participants received 1 hour of Cognito’s daily 40Hz simultaneous auditory-visual sensory stimulation at home for 6 months with placebo group participants receiving sham stimulation. Analysis between the groups suggested a difference in white matter atrophy favoring the treatment group. To compare the treatment group with a larger control group, Cognito studied ADNI1 data as well.

The OVERTURE study treatment group participants exhibited a 0.38±0.82 percentage increase and ADNI1 study participants exhibited a -2.45±0.40 percentage decrease in white matter volume after 6 months (p<0.004).

“Our proprietary gamma sensory stimulation therapy for 6 months was shown to reduce white matter atrophy, and potentially protect axons, prevent myelin and oligodendrocyte damage in Alzheimer’s patients,” said Brent Vaughan, Chief Executive Officer, Cognito Therapeutics. “These results continue to build on our knowledge and understanding of how gamma frequency patterns in the brain are disrupted in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, and how our technology restores the levels of neural activity to improve cognition.”

Adobe’s Digital Dress Changes Patterns

Adobe has recently unveiled its groundbreaking digital dress named Project Primrose.

Have you ever had the age-old problem of being without anything to wear? Imagine clothing that can change patterns at any time with the simple push of a button.

Adobe recently introduced "Project Primrose," a state-of-the-art "digital dress" that is completely interactive.

The ground-breaking gown is made of sequins that also function as "reflective light-diffuser modules" using liquid crystals similar to those used in smart lighting.

The project incorporates a number of technologies and programs that were employed to create the spectacular outcome. Project Primrose, according to Adobe, employs breathable, stretchable, non-emissive materials that enable a whole surface to display content made with Adobe Stock, After Effects, Firefly, and Illustrator. The technology can be used by end users for a variety of other applications, such as furniture, purses, or other articles of apparel, even though the company used an interactive dress to demonstrate the concept, reports TechSpot.

The idea might provide consumers with a new way to engage with fashion and their surroundings in addition to enabling designers and artists to develop new, interactive patterns. People could download and wear cutting-edge patterns from their favorite designers or even make their own, saving them from having to go out and buy another dress, shirt, or pair of shoes.

Lucid Hearing: OTC Hearing Aids

Lucid Hearing is celebrating first anniversary of FDA approval of its over-the-counter hearing aids.

Lucid Hearing, a global leader in advanced hearing technology and audio solutions, is marking the October first anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration's approval of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids by looking back on the progress seen in the OTC market.

The overarching question is whether the FDA accomplished its goal to increase the public's access to hearing aids and improve hearing for adults impaired with mild to moderate hearing loss. To help gain insights, Lucid Hearing conducted a patient survey, sent to OTC purchasers, and a blind survey sent to respondents nationwide between 35-65 years old.

Accessibility

According to the FDA, despite the high number of people affected by hearing loss, only about one-fifth of those who could benefit from hearing aids sought a solution before OTC. From their patient survey, Lucid Hearing learned: 50% of those who purchased OTC products are new hearing aid wearers, indicating the ruling is positively impacting the number of those getting help.

  •  50% of those who purchased OTC products did not get a hearing test prior to purchasing their hearing aids, revealing a higher degree of consumer accessibility.
  • 90% of OTC wearers reported a positive improvement in their lives, demonstrating benefit from hearing aid intervention that may not have happened otherwise.
  • Of those who had not purchased, over 50% were aware OTC hearing aids are available at retailers.
  • OTC products are being purchased across all categories of retail partners, including mass market, pharmacy, electronics, and grocery.

Affordability

Survey results showed that over half of respondents were aware that OTC products cost less than traditional prescription hearing aids. Lucid Hearing launched its OTC lineup to offer affordability. The opening price point starts at $199, with more premium products ranging from $599 to $1,299.This includes the recently released ultra-premium Tala™, which features the company's new proprietary Precision Directional Listening System.

Educate to Correct Misperceptions

While inroads toward access and affordability are being achieved, the national survey also showed the primary reason people have not purchased yet is a perception that OTC devices may be of lesser quality than prescription devices. This could indicate an industry need to continue educating about OTC devices and help consumers understand that 1) testing is still highly encouraged to determine the accurate degree of hearing loss to ensure the hearing aids selected are appropriate, and 2) OTC devices are solely for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

"This past year has been a success in building more awareness about hearing health. We've seen strength in our prescription business in our almost 500 Sam's Clubs locations and in OTC with retail partners across our distribution network," said Jason Kidd, president and COO of Lucid Hearing. "With over 50 percent of the general population in our survey being aware of the OTC category at the one-year mark, the launch of the OTC market has exceeded our expectations. But more work needs to be done to help people understand how OTC devices work and who they can help. We're honored and excited to be a part of this journey."

A long-time player in the hearing aid market, Lucid Hearing's roots and research go back well before the OTC market launched a year ago. Similar to its prescription offerings, deep expertise in research and development went into its OTC lineup, including work done in conjunction with the University of Texas at Dallas to develop the pre-set programming that serves as the foundation for the company's OTC products.

DuPont introduced a low-cyclics silicone soft skin adhesive (SSA) designed for advanced wound care.

DuPont announced the introduction of its new DuPont Liveo MG7-9960 Soft Skin Adhesive. The higher-adhesion, low-cyclics silicone soft skin adhesive (SSA) is designed for advanced wound care dressings and adhering medical devices to the skin for long wear time and gentle removal.

DuPont Liveo has been a globally recognized leader in silicone technology for medical devices, setting the critical quality attributes of silicone skin adhesives. These technologies have become widely adopted by the market in advanced wound care and scar therapies, and now DuPontis complementing its historical range with this new SSA solution, the company said in a press release.

New DuPont Liveo MG 7-9960 Soft Skin Adhesive has the highest peel adhesion in the Liveo SSA family. It offers better conformability, atraumatic removal, high repositionability, improved wear performance, and design flexibility. In addition, low-cyclics Liveo MG 7-9960 SSA is non-sensitizing, non-irritating, and non-cytotoxic, making it ideally suited to protect the highly sensitive and fragile skin of populations including children, the elderly, and patients with skin conditions or open wounds.

The adhesive was developed as DuPont works to expand its portfolio of solutions to support the growing medical device market. It also allows manufacturers to fine-tune performance by varying coat weight to meet device designers' application requirements.
