Smartglasses in comparison to VR/AR Headsets

What distinguishes smart glasses from VR/AR headsets, then?

In both the commercial and consumer segments, the number of high-tech VR/AR headsets and smart glasses is growing incredibly quickly.

The market for extended reality technology is expected to reach $197.3 billion by 2030, according to experts. Furthermore, a lot of specialists predict that wearable technology will skyrocket throughout almost all sectors of the economy.

It's become harder to separate headsets from smart glasses and even spatial computing systems as hardware in the virtual, augmented, and mixed reality landscapes continues to advance. What distinguishes smart glasses from VR/AR headsets, then?

Smart glasses

Smart glasses usually concentrate on bringing digital information into the physical world. A conventional pair of smart glasses won't completely submerge you in a virtual world. Instead, they overlay information over the environment that you view.

Smart glasses have been developed by businesses like Nreal, Lenovo, and Vuzix to improve and empower regular users and customers. These technologies are perfect for giving workers hands-free instructions, providing professionals with remote assistance, and training team members, reports XRToday.

Compared to VR/AR headsets, smart glasses are frequently thinner and more portable. This indicates that they are far more ergonomic and long-term pleasant. However, it typically also means that they are less capable of rendering complicated environments and have less processing capacity.

Benefits of Smart glasses

Smart glasses typically lack the processing capability of VR/AR headsets. Additionally, they don't give the same degree of immersion that a full virtual reality solution does. Smart glasses and VR/AR headsets, however, each have unique advantages.

For example, smart glasses can be great for immersive teamwork. Some even have cameras built in so users can instantly share what they're seeing with contacts. Additional special benefits that smart glasses have include:

·       Greater comfort: Smart glasses are significantly more ergonomic and are made to be as light and comfy as a typical pair of spectacles. They are frequently far more comfortable to wear for extended durations than a VR or AR headset.

·       Affordability: Smart glasses can frequently be less expensive to buy and operate than VR/AR headsets, depending on their integrated capabilities. They also consume less energy, bandwidth, and computer power.

·       Convenience: Users of smart glasses may quickly access useful information, teamwork tools, and apps. You don't need to enter a new virtual environment to reach higher levels of productivity.

VR/AR Headsets

VR/AR headsets frequently let users regulate their degree of"immersion" in a scenario. For instance, the top of the Apple VisionPro headset will have a mixed reality dial.

Read more: New Partnership Aims to Detect Brain Disorder Using Virtual Reality

This gives users the option to choose between fully immersing themselves in virtual reality and viewing their surroundings in full color. The next step up from a standalone "virtual reality" or "augmented reality" device is a VR/AR headset.

Many of the same VR and AR headset features are included with them, including excellent screens, sensors for detecting eye and hand motions, and sophisticated software. However, they also give consumers access to the entire range of extended reality.

Benefits of VR/AR Headsets

In comparison to standard VR headgear like the original MetaQuest, VR/AR or "mixed reality" headsets have many unique advantages. Numerous virtual reality entrepreneurs have started integrating "AR" and "MR" components into their creations.

The Meta Quest 3, for instance, will offer possibilities for a fully virtual experience coupled with high-fidelity color passthrough. Developers can add additional features to their wearable technology by combining AR and VR, such as:

·       Enhanced safety: The inability to see and be aware of your surroundings is one of the major dangers of using fully wireless VR headsets in the modern world. Users will be able to avoid danger and stay safe thanks to the ability to move between VR and AR modes.

·       Better user experiences: You can lessen problems like VR sickness and fatigue by having options to manage how immersed you are in an extended reality encounter. In VR, you can gradually return to reality if you start to feel too overwhelmed.

·       Greater diversity: With a single device, users of VR/AR headsets can experiment with a variety of virtual and augmented reality apps and tools. As a result, there is no longer a need to buy additional hardware for various use scenarios.

Smart Contact Lens Powered by Salt Water

A flexible battery as thin as a human cornea that stores electricity.

Researchers and scientists from Nanyang Technical University in Singapore (NTU Singapore) are working to develop a pair of smart contacts that are driven by tears.

Users will be able to view information on a heads-up display(HUD) in real-time with the archetypal augmented reality (AR) contact lenses.

The devices will have thin, flexible battery technology that is "as thin as a human cornea," and will be powered by the wearers' tears, reports XRToday.

According to the university study article titled "A tear-based battery charged by biofuel for smart contact lenses," the gadget will be powered by saline sources, which will also produce electricity for storage in the flexible battery system.

The saline-powered charging mechanism will enable customers to increase the battery life for almost four hours each 12-hour cycle in addition to external chargers.

The comfort and durability of the gadget will be improved by the smart contacts' exclusion of hazardous materials, wiring, and other invasive technologies from their components.

Related: Mojo AR Contact Lens Wants To Track Your Health

“The most common battery charging system for smart contact lenses requires metal electrodes in the lens, which are harmful if they are exposed to the naked human eye,” says Dr Yun Jeong-Hun, Co-First Author and Research Fellow, NTU’s School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE).

“Meanwhile, another mode of powering lenses, induction charging, requires a coil to be in the lens to transmit power, much like a wireless charging pad for a smartphone. Our tear-based battery eliminates the two potential concerns that these two methods pose, while also freeing up space for further innovation in the development of smart contact lenses.”

Initial research for the device debuted at a Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies Award Singapore lecture in December 2021.

The ultra-compact batteries allow people to control the lightweight, haptic wearable with forearm, wrist, finger, and other movements from the human body.

Lucid Launches Discreet, Innovative Tala Hearing Aid

Fort Worth-based Lucid Hearing announced the release of its latest hearing aid.

Lucid Hearing, LLC announced today the release of its latest hearing aid – Tala, noting that the product is the highest premium option in the company's OTC product line. The Fort Worth-based market leader and global provider of advanced hearing technology and audio solutions said Tala initially will be sold on lucidhearing.com and at Best Buy, with multiple retailers, being added to distribution in the coming months. Tala's price will be $1,299, and future products with the company's new proprietary Precision Directional Listening System (PDL) will be added to the line to address the full spectrum of hearing loss – whether mild to moderate, or more severe.

"Tala is innovative, discreet, and powerful and uses our most advanced technology released to date," said Steve Iseberg, VP of Innovation for Lucid Hearing. "This product's discreet design will make it popular among individuals who have mild to moderate hearing loss, and who want a solution that doesn't look like a hearing aid. It simply looks like you're wearing earbuds to listen to streaming music or entertainment from your phone or TV."

In addition to its Bluetooth wireless streaming, Tala's top-of-the-line features will include patented LucidShape app-controlled customizable sound profiles, a moisture-resistant coating, and a rechargeable design that lasts all day. Importantly, Tala's PDL System enhances the user's ability to hear speech and other desired sounds while minimizing background noise. By combining Lucid Hearing's sophisticated signal processing algorithms with directional power, PDL refines sounds originating from the direction the user is facing while suppressing unwanted noise from other directions, greatly enhancing speech intelligibility and overall listening comfort, the company said in a press release.

"We've positioned Tala's microphones in such a way to optimize the hearing function so that we get the best directional performance through PDL," said Bennett Griffin, EVP of research and development for Lucid Hearing. "These benefits are especially important in situations where individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss are struggling the most, like in noisy restaurants or in meetings, and they're trying to make sure they really understand what people are saying," Griffin noted.

Related: Sony Launches Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids

Additionally, like all of Lucid Hearing's premium OTC products, Tala can be upgraded to a custom-programmed prescription hearing aid solution. "Lucid Hearing operates on a vertically integrated model, from R&D all the way through to our customer-facing hearing clinics, and we've intentionally built a technology stack that allows us to seamlessly upgrade a premium OTC hearing aid to a prescription-level solution, if at some point the customer wants to take that next step. This is something that is unique to Lucid Hearing and our continuum of OTC and prescription hearing aid products," Griffin explained.

The offering of performance-driven and discreet OTC hearing aids like Tala could not be more timely as reports reveal an increased prevalence among Americans of noise-induced hearing loss. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 40 million American adults may have hearing loss resulting from various types of noise exposure.

"We're proud to introduce this product into the market," said Tim Schnell, Lucid Hearing's founder and CEO. "The modern design is incredible and perfect for those with hearing loss who have hesitated to purchase before because they were concerned about possible stigma associated with wearing hearing aids. I'm truly proud of our research and development team and their approach to Tala's design and the high-definition sound that this solution offers, including our new PDL System which makes the product even more effective and impactful for the user," Schnell noted.

About Lucid Hearing

Since its founding in 2009, Lucid Hearing's mission has been to advance hearing healthcare holistically across its family of brands that encompass hearing enhancement, enjoyment, protection, detection, and wellness. The clever and portable technology is driven by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 chipset, which offers outstanding high-resolution experiences for VR training, teamwork, and creativity.

The new device has features like pancake optics that assist in minimizing its weight and size as well as a highly adjustable halo-style head strap made to make it comfortable for every user. Once it's on, users may benefit from the inside-out tracking offered by the ThinkReality VRX, which offers 6 degrees of freedom thanks to its four outward-facing tracking cameras.

In order to use AR (Augmented Reality) or MR (Mixed Reality) applications that integrate the real world around you and to navigate the space around you safely without having to take off the headset, two additional cameras also provide "full-color, high-resolution" pass-through of the user's surroundings. The Snapdragon XR platform that drives the headgear increases this hardware's potential for many use cases, according to Lenovo.

Ceribell’s EEG Headset Wins FDA 510(k) Clearance

Ceribell announced it has secured a new FDA clearance for its ClarityPro EEG headset system.

Venture-backed medical device start-up company Ceribell announced its new software ClarityPro has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the indication of diagnosing Electrographic Status Epilepticus (ESE). ESE is a potentially hidden condition where a brain seizure may not trigger any convulsive signs.

ClarityPro is now the only FDA-indicated device for the diagnosis of ESE in adult patients over the age of 18. ClarityPro is also the first and only device to offer NTAP reimbursement for the diagnosis of ESE, the company said in a press release.

The FDA grants a limited number of Breakthrough Designations annually, with the aim of expediting FDA review to give patients and healthcare providers accelerated access to new technologies that meet rigorous standards. Ceribell's ESE Diagnosis is the second Breakthrough Device Designation granted to the company in the past 12 months.

The NTAP reimbursement program recognizes new technologies that provide a substantially improved clinical benefit over currently available therapies, giving Medicare beneficiaries timely access to advancements in healthcare. With a historically low number of NTAPs granted, approval for Ceribell signifies CMS confidence in both the technology and in the need for point-of-care diagnosis of ESE. ClarityPro is the first and only ICU monitoring device to receive CMS NTAP reimbursement. NTAP reimbursement of up to $913.90 for eligible Medicare patient cases will become available on October 1, 2023.

Related: ULTEEM: Noninvasive Epilepsy Monitoring Wearable That Attaches To Any Ordinary Eyeglasses

"These decisions from the FDA and CMS are further validation that Ceribell's clinical impact is significant for patients," said Jane Chao, Ph.D. Ceribell's Co-founder and CEO. "This dedicated reimbursement from CMS will also expand access to this vital technology to more Americans, especially seniors and critically ill patients who are more likely to suffer from neurological illnesses."

The ability to diagnose ESE is essential to treating prolonged seizures, which may affect one-third of neurological critical care patients during their hospital stay. These seizures increase the risk of permanent brain injury with long-term neurological disability. Early diagnosis and management have been shown to dramatically improve patient outcomes.

Ceribell is a point-of-care EEG system that delivers real-time seizure monitoring and alerts 24/7, enabling rapid and more precise treatment of patients with suspected non-convulsive seizures. The new CeribellClarityPro software utilizes a machine learning model to analyze EEG signals and generate bedside alerts. The software, combined with the ease of use of the Ceribell system, empowers bedside clinicians to make decisions quickly and confidently.

Ceribell's ClarityPro is now the first and only device to diagnose ESE according to the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS)definition of ESE. Neurologists are required to review all EEGs for the presence of other pathological EEG patterns. ClarityPro will streamline the EEG review process by flagging all portions of the EEG that could contain seizures or other areas of concern, enabling faster and more confident triage.

About Ceribell

Ceribell, Inc. is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. Ceribell deploys a cloud-linked, portable electroencephalogram (EEG) device to assess brain waves in minutes to identify the occurrence of seizures in emergency rooms and intensive care units. The Ceribell system can be quickly and easily applied to a patient by any healthcare provider and delivers brain monitoring results within minutes. Ceribell is focused on making EEG widely available, more efficient, and more cost-effective to improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions for patients at risk for seizures. The Ceribell EEGSystem first received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2017 and is commercially available in the United States.

Virtuix Announces ‘Omni One’ VR Treadmill Release Date

Austin-based VR firm Virtuix announced the release date of the 'Omni One'.

The 'Omni' omni-directional treadmill for virtual reality(VR) was created by Virtuix, a provider of gaming technology solutions, and the business have announced the release date of the 'Omni One,' the first consumer version of the Omni.

Omni One is modeled after the Omni Pro, a commercial version of the Omni that is offered at more than 500 entertainment venues in 45 countries, and is made to blend in elegantly with a user's living room or other interior space. In comparison to Omni Pro, Omni One, according to Virtuix, is lighter, more compact (4-foot circumference), simple to fold up or carry around, and offers players more flexibility of movement, including the ability to squat, kneel, and jump, reports Auganix.

Virtuix started an equity crowdsourcing campaign earlier this year to raise Omni One's profile among customers, gamers, and the investing community. The round's $5 million target has already been exceeded, according to the business, by more than $4.7 million USD. Virtuix said that it has decided to end the crowdfunding campaign early on August 10 as a result of this accomplishment.

A previous investor, JC Team Capital, is the round's lead investor, and Parth Jani, the founder and CEO of JC Team, will join Virtuix's Board of Directors. According to Virtuix, it plans to use the investment to increase Omni One production and achieve profitability in 2024.

“We’re thrilled about the success of our investment campaign and our community’s excitement about Omni One,” said Jan Goetgeluk, Virtuix’s founder and CEO. “Omni One is a groundbreaking product that sets us up for rapid revenue growth. We already have a waitlist of 35,000 interested customers, and shipping just 3,000 units a month would bring in $100 million in annual revenues. We’re ready to scale.”

Omni One beta units have started to arrive in Virtuix's community of 8,000 equity investors, who were given the opportunity to order the product before the general public. The company stated that it planned to deliver all investor units by the end of the year and over 1,000 units by year's end. Preorders will be available to the general public in late 2023, and delivery will begin in Q2 2024.

The Omni One has an initial price of USD $2,595 including shipping, however, the manufacturer also has payment options with monthly payments starting at USD $65. The treadmill and a Pico VR headset (market value USD $699) are both included in the price of the Omni One. Investors in Virtuixare the first to order an Omni One system.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Raises $280 Million

Neuralink, the biotech startup owned by Elon Musk, raised $280 million in a funding round.

The biotechnology startup Neuralink, owned by Elon Musk, raised $280 million in a funding round, the company revealed on Monday via X, the platform owned by Musk that replaced Twitter.

The controversial billionaire and cofounder of PayPal, Peter Thiel, founded Founders Fund, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, which took the lead in the Series D investment.

“We’re extremely excited about this next chapter at Neuralink,” the company wrote.

Musk has been working on this project for the past five years, and the brain chip business intends to employ implants to connect your brain to a computer. The business, which until this point had exclusively conducted animal testing, has come under fire after a monkey died during project testing in 2022 while being trained to play the computer game Pong, reports CNN.

Neuralink has been creating Bluetooth-enabled implantable chips that can be placed into macaque monkeys' brains and, according to the company, can communicate with computers via a small receiver.

The financial information was revealed months after Musk declared that the business would begin conducting human trials. At a hiring event in December, the billionaire said that Neuralink had "most" of its paperwork submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration and could start human testing in six months.

Related: Neuralink’s Brain Chip Gets A Wide-Ranging Update

However, according to a December article by Reuters, staff claim the corporation is rushing to market, which has led to irresponsible animal deaths and a federal probe.

Neuralink's brain implants will require regulatory approval before they are mass-produced and made available to the general public. In 2021, the FDA published a document outlining the organization's preliminary conclusions about brain-computer interface devices, saying that the industry is"progressing rapidly."

Neuralink posted a tweet on Monday informing followers that they were hiring and inviting them to "join in on engineering challenges to restore vision and mobility."

DJI Osmo Action 4 Review: A Powerful GoPro Rival

The DJI Action 4 is a capable action camera that checks all the necessary boxes.

Version 4 of the DJI Osmo Action 3 has been released less than a year after its debut. This action camera guarantees superior low-light performance, better stabilization choices, and increased durability.

Compared to version 3, the DJI Osmo Action 4's sensor is substantially bigger, measuring 1/1.3". This causes the pixel size to rise from 1.6 to 2.4 meters. The lens has the same 155° Field of View and f/2.8aperture as before. The 10-bit sensor can record 4k footage at up to 120fps according to DJI and is claimed to improve overall image quality, reports The Verge.

The Action 4's circular lens cover, which stands out from the rest of the GoPro lineup the most despite having a larger sensor, appears to be about the same size.

You can shoot in 10-bit D-Log M format to get the best quality out of it. You can capture more before you need to transfer the information to a computer because the camera now accepts microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 512GB (up from 256GB). The Action 4 can capture 4K video at 120 fps and up to 130 Mbps, the same as its predecessor. You can shoot in 10-bitD-Log M format to get the best quality out of it. You can capture more before you need to transfer the information to a computer because the camera now accepts microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 512GB (up from 256GB).

To maintain the image's stability and eliminate image bounce, Rock Steady 3.0 technology and 360-degree Horizon Steady stabilization are used. Compared to the 148 degrees seen on the GoPro Hero 11, the 155-degree field of view offers a broader visual spread.

The DJI Invisi Stick feature is also available on the Action4 if you enjoy taking artistic photographs. This eliminates the selfie stick from the video.

This may be a helpful feature because many riders are experimenting with shooting in ways other than the standard POV (point of view)of a chest or helmet cam.

Related: The World’s Smallest Action Camera

Similar to mounting Action 3, Action 4 can be mounted. The camera is positioned in landscape mode thanks to a magnetic mounting device on the bottom. Here again, the superior magnetic latching mounting method is utilized. Although it doesn't appear to have altered at all, it continues to be convenient. If you purchase a few extra baseplates, swapping between mounts is significantly quicker than removing the conventional GoPro-style thumbscrews.

This model's resistance to water has improved; it can now be submerged up to 18 meters without extra housing. Since I spend most of my time on dry land, it doesn't really matter to me, but for diving fanatics, it might be a significant concern. Open-water divers can dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters for recreational purposes, thus those who participate can use their cameras carefree on any dive.

According to DJI, the Multifunctional Battery Case is a flexible power bank that can simultaneously charge up to three Osmo Action 4 batteries. Additionally, this can be used to charge other USB-powered gadgets.

It can be purchased independently or as a component of the Adventure Combo bundle, which costs $499/£469 and includes the Osmo Action 4 and a number of accessories.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 is available now and is priced at £379/$399.

Asus ROG Ally Review: Outstanding PC Gaming

At $700, Asus ROG Ally may appear way more intrinsic than the Steam Deck.

Given that Asus is one of the most well-known brands in the PC hardware industry, it's not surprising that they were the first significant hardware manufacturer to introduce a portable gaming PC. It is up to the industry's titans to make the commandeering push and propel handheld gaming PCs into the mainstream, despite the fact that smaller boutique firms from China have ignited the entire handheld gaming PC mania.

With its Steam Deck, Valve may have been one of the most unexpected participants. The Steam Deck was an immediate hit for many people thanks to its unique software designed specifically for the company's good-grade hardware at a competitive price.

Despite having no prior expertise in developing hardware goods, Valve has been able to capture the attention of the larger gaming community with the Steam Deck. Can Asus take up Valve's mantle and convince the public that portable PCs are the way of the PC gaming future? In our assessment of the Asus ROG Ally, let's examine this.

The Asus ROG Ally appears blatantly gamey in terms of design. If the two analog sticks aren't sufficient cues, then the handheld's principal use should be evident from the device's sharp edges, speaker grilles with acute angles, RGB rings surrounding the analog sticks, and holographic stickers with the ROG logo on their outside corners, reports TechSpot

Fortunately, Asus didn't go overboard; designers made sure the corners weren't too harsh for comfort. Moreover, fortunately, the Ally just has two RGB rings. While the backside has two paddle buttons, dual air intakes, and another holographic sticker, the top has shoulder buttons, triggers, and a variety of ports. Additionally, there are two broad air exhausts on top.

Compared to the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally is lighter and smaller. It is considerably simpler to hold for prolonged periods of time without support or to take around in a backpack and never seems as intimidating in the hand. This has the disadvantage of being slightly less gripping; in contrast to the ROG Ally, the Steam Deck has thick grips that give your fingers something to hold onto. The ROG Ally's compactness required a trade-off, but people with larger hands will find the Steam Deck more comfortable.

The RGB lighting on the ROG Ally is confined to the rings around the joysticks. There are only two zones in each ring, yet the colors complement one another wonderfully. Fortunately, the illumination is set to a much lower intensity out of the box and may be entirely muted. It can still grow very bright, much brighter than the panel itself. Additionally, you may configure the illumination to match CPU utilization or temperature as well as your music or compatible games.

There is a lot going on at the device's top. The power button serves as both the fingerprint scanner and the power button. Then, just next to the volume controls, there are two status LEDs for power and charging. A huge port has a USB-C connector and an exclusive Asus connector for external GPUs. Finally, there is a headphone jack and a microSD card slot.

Even in the already specialized market for handheld consoles, the Ally is undoubtedly a niche device. This device will undoubtedly satisfy your very unique gaming itch if you are an experienced PC player who simply cannot spend enough time in front of your PC but needs a solution to continue playing your games whenever and wherever. To appeal to a wider audience, it will need improved software and longer battery life.
