Mojo Vision, a Saratoga, CA-based AR startup has revealed its Mojo Vision 14K pixel-per-inch display, which makes it the smallest and densest dynamic display ever made.

After founding in 2015, the company is working on what it calls “invisible computing” technology. Rather than constantly being distracted by having a phone in your face all the time, or the friction of an AR or VR headset, Mojo Vision says this tech can help you be more present and engaged with the real world. So if you get a notification or need to quickly access information, you’ll be able to see it at a glance, reports Cnet.

The miniature 14,000-ppi display uses MicroLED, a technology expected to play a crucial role in the future development of next-generation wearables, AR/VR hardware, and heads-up displays (HUDs).

The screen is ideal for use in ultra-small and dense augmented reality and virtual reality displays.

“It is information when you need it, and it’s not there when you don’t,” said Steve Sinclair, senior vice president of product and marketing at Mojo Vision. “We call it invisible computing. A lot of folks are focusing on MicroLEDs. It’s a good candidate for near-eye solutions. It can be used outdoors. Power is a consideration. And we drive the size of the pixels as low as possible.”

Unlike OLED, microLED is based on conventional GaN LED technology, which offers far higher total brightness than OLED produces, as much as 30 times, as well as higher efficiency in terms of lux/W. Therefore, MicroLEDs enable comfortable viewing outdoors.

This MicroLED display has a pixel density 300 times greater than current smartphone displays.

“We’re actually working on pixels that are even smaller than this,” said Sinclair. “Our goal is to eventually try and match the resolution of the human eye.”

AT the CES this year, Nreal unveiled AR Nreal Light smartglasses which feels like a shrunken down version of smartglasses made by Magic Leap and HoloLens. Now, the Beijing-based company announced it will begin shipping the glasses later this year for a price of $499.

The controller can point and control things, but doesn’t accurately track motion in space like Magic Leap’s controller can, reports Cnet

Recently, the company raised an additional $16 million in funding from China Everbright Limited New Economy Fund, iQiyi, Shunwei Capital, and China Growth Capital. That money came just a month after the company announced a $15 million round at the CES 2019 tech trade show in Las Vegas.

FDA Clears Wearable Device to Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome

FDA has cleared a wearable device called IB-Stim to treat functional abdominal pain.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder that causes abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. Although it affects the large intestine, IBS often appears to be associated with a poor nervous system. Specifically, the brain can perceive the signals sent by the gut as being abnormal, resulting in pain and discomfort.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a wearable device called IB-Stim to treat functional abdominal pain associated with IBS in patients ages 11-18. IBS is one of the leading causes of abdominal pain in children, reports Business Wire.

“This is a monumental day for the millions of children suffering from functional abdominal pain related to IBS, along with their parents and clinical providers,” said IHS Chief Executive Officer Brian Carrico. “We know how debilitating this condition can be, and we are proud to release IB-Stim as the first FDA indicated treatment option for this patient population.”

The device, which looks similar to a hearing aid, is placed behind the patient’s ear during an outpatient visit and works by sending gentle electrical impulses into cranial nerve bundles located in the ear. This stimulation targets brain areas involved in processing pain and aids in the reduction of functional abdominal pain associated with IBS.

The Study

The FDA’s decision was based on a double blind, randomized, controlled trial which was designed to measure the effects of IB-Stim compared to placebo on several aspects of pain including worst pain and the pain-frequency-severity-duration composite score. The study also measured patients’ overall symptom improvement based on the Symptom Response Scale. The study showed that prior to IB-Stim treatment, 70 percent of patients had failed to improve with an average of four medications trialed. Patients treated with IB-Stim demonstrated an 81 percent improvement in global symptoms with no serious adverse events, and minimal to no side effects.

Wiring materials for smart clothes and smart patches should have the ability to mount functional parts, in addition to light weight, thin profile, and the flexibility needed to ensure comfort when worn. These materials must also provide elasticity needed to accommodate the various movements of the human body. While existing FPCs offer light weight, thin profile, flexibility, and mountability, they lack elasticity, reports OKI.

OKI’s new Stretchable FPC offers elasticity by replacing the polyimide widely used in existing FPCs with an elastic substrate. This elastic substrate can be stretched repeatedly, like rubber, and is heat-resistant, allowing components to be solder-mounted. Its circuit conductor incorporates the same copper wiring as existing FPCs but the wiring method is specially designed to allow it to work with the stretchable substrate. The use of copper wiring minimizes variations in conductor resistance due to FPC expansion or contraction, allowing use of the FPC as a sensor. Potential applications for the Stretchable FPC include use as a wearable sensor to help diagnose disease in the chest; the Stretchable FPC is wrapped around the chest to measure signal fluctuations in the copper wiring.

WatchPAT One, a Fully Disposable Home Sleep Apnea Test Receives FDA Clearance

A study showed that people with severe sleep apnea may be up to three times more likely to die prematurely, and that risk increases if the sleep disorder is left untreated. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnea.

On March, Wearable Technologies reported on a device called WatchPAT 300 Home Sleep Apnea Detection System. WatchPat 300 received FDA clearance in August 2018, and now, the company’s new device WatchPat One received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

WatchPAT™ One is developed by an Israel-based company Itamar Medical Ltd. Itamar develops, manufactures and markets non-invasive diagnostic medical devices for sleep apnea with a focus on the cardiology market, the company said in a news release.

WatchPAT One is the first and only fully disposable Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT). The system incorporates the technology and comfort advances of WatchPAT 300, which received 510(k) clearance in August 2018 and was launched in March 2019.

“WatchPAT One is ideally suited for clinics and practices that recognize the value of HSAT but have limited resources, infrastructure or capital to invest in acquiring or managing our reusable WatchPAT products,” said Gilad Glick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Itamar Medical. “WatchPAT One offers patients and physicians the same simplicity, accuracy and reliability as WatchPAT 300 without the need for return shipping, downloading, cleaning or preparation for the next study. Roy Allela, a 25-year-old Kenyan man has invented smart gloves that can convert hand gestures of sign language into audio speech. This innovation could change the lives of hearing-impaired people across the world.

Dubbed Sign-IO, the gloves have sensors stitched to each finger. The sensors interpret the word being signed from the bend of the finger.

Allela said challenges faced by his deaf niece inspired him to create the gloves. He also said that the speed at which the signs are vocalized is one of the most important aspects of the smart gloves:

“My 6-year-old niece wears the gloves, pairs them to her phone or mine, then starts signing and I’m able to understand what she’s saying,” says Allela.

“People speak at different speeds and it’s the same with people who sign – some are really fast, others are slow, so we integrated that into the mobile application so that it’s comfortable for anyone to use it.”

Allela is among 16 young Africans who have been shortlisted by The Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for inventors from six countries. He says the recognition is a wonderful validation of his work and a great opportunity to put African inventors on the map.

Northwestern University and Google Team Up to Use AI to Detect Lung Cancer Earlier

Lung cancer can be lurking in plain sight, only to be detected too late to be properly treated.

Lung cancer kills 160,000 people in the U.S. every year and the global death toll from the disease is around 2 million. Lung cancer can be lurking in plain sight, only to be detected too late to be properly treated. Like all cancers, the best chance for a successful treatment of lung cancer depends on early detection by screening people at high risk for the disease, such as smokers. However, these screenings aren’t perfect, and the subtle difference between a harmful tumor (malignant) and a harmless tumor (benign) can be difficult to distinguish from a CT scan.

A collaboration between Google and medical partners including Northwestern University revealed a new AI-based tool that can create a better model of a patient’s lung from the CT scan images. This 3-D image helps AI to better predict malignancy of tumors by learning from previous scans. The system was able to confirm evidence of cancer more quickly and had fewer false positive and false negatives than its human counterparts.

“This area of research is incredibly important, as lung cancer has the highest rate of mortality among all cancers, and there are many challenges in the way of broad adoption of lung cancer screening,” Shravya Shetty, the technical lead at Google, said in a University release. “Our work examines ways AI can be used to improve the accuracy and optimize the screening process, in ways that could help with the implementation of screening programs.”

While lung cancer cells can be destroyed if detected soon enough, only a small number of the eligible U.S. population is screened for lung cancer, according to Google. A more advanced system may be able to detect lung cancer quickly and influence more people to screen for the disease.

“Radiologists generally examine hundreds of two-dimensional images or ‘slices’ in a single CT scan but this new machine learning system views the lungs in a huge, single three-dimensional image,” study co-author and anesthesiology and engineering Prof. Mozziyar Etemadi said in the release. “AI in 3D can be much more sensitive in its ability to detect early lung cancer than the human eye looking at 2-D images. This is technically ‘4D’ because it is not only looking at one CT scan, but two (the current and prior scan) over time.”

The wireless stethoscope combines AI algorithm to examine children’s lung and heart recordings. StethoMe is intended to be used by parents to check on their kids when there are signs of sickness. Instead of immediately bringing the child in for an exam, a parent can perform a basic auscultation and send the recording for analysis by the company’s AI-powered algorithms to look for signs of distress, reports MedGadget.

The consistency between doctors in the recognition of auscultation sounds in primary care is very low – ranging from 20% to 80%*. Examinations with a traditional stethoscope depend on the experience and parameters of the physician’s auditory system. Medically tested, StethoMe has shown to increase accuracy by up to 13%. Results are shared directly with a doctor who then advises as to whether that child needs to visit a doctor or emergency room, or can remain at home under close supervision, StethoMe said in a news release.

Firstly, the high rate of misdiagnosis that occurs (​cases of delayed, missed, and incorrect diagnosis are common – in the range of 10 per cent to20 per cent​ and, secondly, the very high number of unnecessary visits ​(​up to 70 per cent in the US. Temp Pal is a comprehensive and convenient wireless body temperature tracking device that provides real-time monitoring combined with smart alerts, reports MobiHealthNews.

The patented stamp-sized soft, flexible patch has a high-performance temperature sensor with a battery life of 2-3 days. It can also be connected via Bluetooth to transmit body data to a secure cloud through its mobile app, delivering real-time charts and smart alerts. The wearable device can also be applied in hospitals and clinics as it offers centralized tracking and analytics from multiple devices.
