Open Wearables

Dr Anna D. Zych is a neuroscientist specialising in wearable health data. She completed an integrated masters degree at the University of Glasgow, including a research placement at Princeton University where she worked on adult neurogenesis. She then earned her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, where she examined the neurobiology of emotions, focusing on neurotransmitters and interoception. This background at the intersection of neuroscience and physiology now informs her work on consumer wearables. Devices worn by millions of people promise insight into individual physiology, and whether their measurements support that promise is a scientific question. She addresses that question in her newsletter, The Science Behind Wearables, which examines what wearables can and cannot measure and grounds each claim in peer-reviewed research. Her readers include founders, product leaders, clinicians and data analysts, as well as people trying to make sense of data from their own devices. As Health Science Lead at Momentum, she is responsible for the scientific methodology behind Open Wearables, an open-source platform for wearable data integration. The platform is self-hosted, allowing organisations to retain control over health data and meeting HIPAA and GDPR on their own terms.
