What if managing critical medication didn't have to rely on waiting for the next blood test?
For millions of people living with bipolar disorder, lithium remains an important treatment. Yet maintaining the right concentration in the body presents a significant challenge. Too little can increase the risk of relapse, while excessive levels can cause serious toxicity.
Today, lithium monitoring relies on periodic laboratory blood tests, providing only occasional snapshots of drug concentrations and leaving clinicians with limited visibility between appointments.
Aurovian is developing technology that could change this.
The Brisbane-based medtech company, with a UK presence, is developing a wearable biosensing platform designed to move therapeutic drug monitoring towards continuous, personalised care.
Using proprietary electrochemical biosensors and microneedle electrodes, Aurovian's wearable patch is designed to measure lithium concentrations in interstitial fluid. Connected to a patient application, clinician dashboard and AI-enabled analytics, the proposed system aims to provide ongoing drug-level information, potentially supporting more informed treatment decisions and earlier intervention.
From Laboratory Progress to Clinical Potential
Aurovian's biosensors have already demonstrated continuous in-vitro performance marking an important development milestone. The company is now preparing its integrated prototype for first-in-human clinical investigations scheduled in early 2027.
While lithium is the initial focus, the technology's potential extends much further. Aurovian's platform is being developed to support additional drug-specific sensors, opening opportunities across medicines requiring careful concentration monitoring.
With patent-pending technology, Aurovian is seeking pharmaceutical partnerships, targeted drug-sensor development collaborations and future clinical pilot partners. The company is also preparing for a Series A investment round following its first-in-human investigations.
Aurovian's vision is to move therapeutic drug monitoring beyond occasional blood tests towards continuous, data-informed and personalised treatment.
